Metallica Threaten to Distribute Music in Cereal Boxes
There is desperation and then there is Metallica. Apparently the band is so desperate to get their records out that they are willing to pollute something as innocent as breakfast cereal. Perhaps they are targeting that younger market which is easily impressionable when presented with the trappings of a rich celebrity lifestyle. On the other hand it could be a sign of the times when virtually every group is releasing a single. It helps if you are prepared for every eventuality especially if the competition is taking a clinical approach to marketing.
Is this really a good marketing idea?
Parents may have something to say about it if they discovered that the Metallica was busy corrupting their kids early in the morning. The drummer Lars Ulrich was discussing some of the ways that they are considering in terms of distributing their material. The band is writing some new material which they hope to share with the public while avoiding some of the traditional routes. We know that most bands prefer to get a tune and then promote it heavily until it reaches the top of the charts. Breakfast cereal is very innovative but is bound to create some friction with the parents.
Unfortunately for the band, they do not have the backing of a major label. They split from Warner Brothers after the release of Lulu. At that time they had been working with Lou Reed. The band is also putting final touches on their program for the Orion Festival which is scheduled to take place at Bader Field in the Atlantic City between the 23rd and 24th of June this year. Some of the other acts that they will be joining include Fucked Up, the Arctic Monkeys and Best Coast. Things are really looking up for the band despite the fact that they do not have a big record contract.
