Cat Power is Giving away the ‘Sun’ Track Titled ‘Cherokee’

If you are one of the lucky few who get the free ‘Sun’ track ‘Cherokee’ then you can thank Cat Power for it. The singer seems to be in a very generous mood at the moment and she is giving away stuff. Some might say that she will benefit from the publicity in the lead up to her new album. Fans can download the song free of charge. It is six years since Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) released her last album. Now she is about to do it all over again with ‘Sun’. Her first taster for the album was ‘Ruin’ and it was remarkably well received.

- Fans are given a special treat: All you need to do is go to Chan’s website and add your email address. She will send you a copy of the song and a snare remix done by Nicholas Jaar, the New York electro artist.

Meanwhile plans already underway for the eventual release of ‘Sun’ on the 3^rd of September under the Matador label. Three weeks from now you will be able to hear her first original material since 2006. The piece is self-produced but the French engineer Phillipe Zdar oversaw its mixdown. The album is probably being released in a series of teasers. ‘Cherokee’ is the opening cut and it comes with a rather tantalizing extra gift courtesy of Jaar.

When was the last time she released something?

In 2008 Cat Power did some covers under the ‘Jukebox’ album. However her last real studio effort was ‘The Greatest’ which was dropped in 2006. The tracklisting for the new album is as follows:

She recorded the LP in various locations including her studio in Malibu. Recently she was speaking to The Stool Pigeon about the four year break between ‘Jukebox’ and her latest album. She says that at the time she had entered into an intense personal relationship which she wanted to be successful. When the romance came to an end she decided to go back to her work. Despite the immense personal loss, she says that she is glad to have finished her new album. Here is a clip of the singer performing one of her numbers:
