Madonna has been dubbed a ‘Moralising Slut’ by a Russian Politician following her Support of Pussy Riot

Clearly the singer’s support of Pussy Riot did not go down well in Russia. A senior politician from the regime has dubbed Madonna a ‘moralising slut’ in revenge for her perceived criticism of the actions of the Kremlin machine.  Dmitry Rogozin is the Vice-Premier for Defense. He says that the ‘Material Girl’ should take off the cross or put on pants instead of criticizing them.

The politician posted offensive messages on Twitter after the American showed support for the jailed Russian Punk band during a gig in Moscow. Many other artists have criticized the Russian state machinery for imprisoning the girl band. The fact that this politician is an ambassador to NATO is troubling. Aren’t they trained to use diplomatic language? Anyway he did not hold back.

A politician lays into an artist

According to Rogozin with age every former ‘slut’ tries to lecture people on morality and he is not prepared to take it lying down. He particularly took offense at the fact that the singer was spreading her message during an overseas tour. A Twitter user challenged his comments and he promptly advised the singer to put on pants or take off the cross. This week Madonna used the Moscow leg of her MDNA tour to express support for the jailed artists.

During a speech to a 20,000-strong crowd, the mega star prayed for their freedom and paid tribute to their courage. She then stripped her bra and revealed the words ‘Pussy Riot’ in Russian. At the time she was wearing a balaclava in the style of the Russian Punk Collective. The case of Nadia Tolokonikovoy, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich has attracted lots of media attention. It highlights the attempts by Vladimir Putin to crack down on any perceived dissent.

These three women were arrested in March after doing an impromptu gig at the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow. They were protesting against the support that the Orthodox Christian Church was giving for the Russian President. Ever since that time, the group has been in detention on trial for hooliganism. The prosecution wants to have them imprisoned for three years. At the same time stars such as Jarvis Cocker, Alex Kapranos, St. Vincent, Franz Ferdinand and Kate Nash have joined in support of the band. The girl group has protested their innocence but is prepared to offer an apology.
