Madonna has been Handing out Pink Anti-Homophobia Wristbands at a Russian Gig
It seems that being referred to as a ‘moralizing slut’ has not dented Madonna’s confidence. The singer continues with her firebrand MDNA tour and has been needling the Russian authorities. Recently she handed out pink anti-homophobia wristbands at her gig in the country. No doubt this is meant to challenge a regime that is often characterized by uncontrolled violence towards sexual minorities.
She is clearly not prepared to water down her political stand regardless of the opposition that she is getting from furious politicians. On the 9th of August, attendees at her much-publicized concert in St. Petersburg were given wristbands of a color that is routinely used by the gay community as an identification symbol. She stood at the entrance to the Peterbugrsky Arena to distribute the bands according to a report filed by the Hollywood Reporter. Apparently she felt that the bands were going to show tolerance for the gay community within Russia.
Changing those who refuse to change
You can question many of her career moves but Madonna has never wavered in her support of sexual minorities. She is now taking up a stand against new regulation which was adopted by the Russian Regime in March. It banned the annual gay pride parade because it allegedly promoted ‘gay lifestyles’ and was an unacceptable ‘propagation of homosexuality’. Both the lifestyle and its promotion have been effectively outlawed.
Madonna used her gig to say that she wanted to fight for the right to be free. She asked the fans who attended her concert to fight for gay rights by putting the bracelets on their hands. At the moment it is not clear whether the Russian authorities will pass another law banning the wristbands. Earlier in the week she used the Moscow leg of her tour to express support for the jailed Russian punk collective ‘Pussy Riot’.
The singer made a speech to a crowd of 20,000 fans in which she said that the group was paying the price for their act and she prayed that they would be set free. Consequently she stripped her bra to reveal the name of the title written on the back. She also donned a balaclava in the style of the jailed artists. The ‘Like a Virgin’ singer was twitter-attacked by a Russian politician who suggested that she takes off the cross and dresses more conservatively. Here is a clip of the ‘Material Girl’ in action.
