Snoop Dogg has been Continuing his Transformation into Snoop Lion at the Sziget Festival
At first it seemed like a joke but now we know that Snoop Dogg is really serious about transforming into Snoop Lion. His performances at the Sziget Festival showed that he was prepared to embrace his newfound identity. The American rapper was on stage on the 11th of August. He was issued a new name by a Rastafarian priest when he visited Jamaica on a journey of self discovery. At the time he was filming his forthcoming documentary titled ‘Reincarnated’. Incredibly he said that he believes himself to be a reincarnation of the late Bob Marley. Therefore he had decided to explore reggae sounds in his new album which is imaginatively titled ‘Reincarnated’.
The drama continues
During his set at the performance Snoop Lion performed the ‘La La La’, a song that has been described as being a dubby reggae-by-numbers single. Sadly for some fans…that was the only number to show that Snoop Dogg had changed direction. Others showed that they were happy with the change as they waved banners with the new name. In any case he seemed to give the crowds a bit of fun. For the rest of the set, he chose his reliable hits in order to dazzle the audience.
Many commentators said that his crowd was by far the most excitable of the festival and there were many people out there hoping to catch sight of the controversial rapper. In addition he played numbers by other artists which featured him including ‘P.I.M.P’ by 50 Cent and ‘California Gurls’ by Katy Perry. Sometimes he forgot the words to the chorus and the audience laughed it off. He asked them to help him out when he got lost. The show was typically extravagant with hype men and dancers who had virtually nothing on. We got glimpses of the rapper’s blunt-toking character. The bling included the singer’s name as well as knuckle duster which was emblazoned with the word ‘Dogg’.
Perhaps the climax came at the end with a crowd-pumping rendition of ‘Gin and Juice’ and ‘Who Am I’ or ‘What’s My Name?’ In ‘Young, Wild & free’ he collaborated with Wiz Khalifa. Many people said that he was the main reason why they came for the festival. Maria from Oslo (Norway) was one of them. She said that she hoped that he did not give up his hip-hop vibe even if she liked the new song. Here is the full set:
