The Olympics Closing Ceremony had a Britpop Theme
They are now doing the cleaning up act after the successful conclusion of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The organizers chose a Britpop theme to mark the end of the remarkable celebration of sport at its very best. The athletes formed a mosh-pit during the ‘Symphony of British Music’. Right up to the last minute, the full details of the show were left secret but in the end they did not disappoint. It was nothing short of spectacular. On the 12th of August, days of competitive sport came to an end with many winners and some losers.
Celebrating 50 years of British music
The organizers created a BBC London 2012 Twitter account which eventually started confirming the details of the show. 3500 performers were invited. Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall and Prince William did not make it. However they were represented by Kate Middleton and Prince Harry. A speech was read out on behalf of the prince and the Queen also sent her messages of congratulations. Prior to the actual event there had been significant speculation about the form that it was going to take. Specifically many people were wondering what acts would be included.
By the 10th of August it was reported that the Spice Girls would make an appearance. Others confirmed were Muse, George Michael, One Direction and Ed Sheeran. During the rehearsals the press pictured some of the stars preparing for the extravaganza. They included the Queen guitarist Brian May, Tinie Tempah, Jessie J, Annie Lennox and Eric Idle of Monty Python. Rumors abounded that the Kaiser Chiefs, Fatboy Slim, Kate Bush and the Pet Shop Boys would make an appearance.
Celebrating the landmarks of a city
The organizers were careful to showcase some of the most famous landmarks in the city of London including Big Ben, the Battersea Power Station, the Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye and the Royal Albert Hall. On the 9th of August Muse posted a sneak preview picture of the closing ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games. It was titled ‘warming up’. In it their frontman Matt Bellamy was trailed by drummers who were dressed in gold costumes.
‘A Symphony of British Music: Music For The Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games’ is the title that they have chosen for the lead album. It contains the music that was performed on the night and it was released on the 12th of August. Watch the spectacle on this clip:
