Grimes has Unveiled the ‘Genesis’ video which was inspired by Hieronymus Bosch
Russian politics and Hieronymus Bosch are preoccupying Grimes.
Inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, the singer Grimes has released the ‘Genesis’ video. Those who have been following the artist will know that this track has been extracted from her critically acclaimed album titled ‘Visions’. Needless to say, the video is as outlandish as anything that the artist has produced before. It is set in the Californian desert and the inspiration comes from the paintings of ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’ and ‘Four Last Things’ which were seismic works of Hieronymus Bosch. She also got inspiration from the fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. Another influence was the Tank Girl creation by Jamie Hewlett.
The great inspiration for a cool video clip
Meanwhile Grimes has indicated that she will be playing at the Reading and Leeds festivals this weekend. This is part of her short UK tour which includes appearances at the Heaven Club in London between the 5th and 6th of September. She will also play at the Bestival in the Isle of Wight on the 9th of September. Having made it to the shortlist for the Polaris Music Prize, her career has been going from strength to strength. She was particularly praised for her 2012 album ‘Visions’ from which the latest clips have been extracted.
Over the weekend she waded into the controversy surrounding the jailing of the Russian punk collective Pussy Riot, saying that it was a reflection of a country whose homophobia and racisms are only just being revealed to the world. According to her it was not surprising that the Russian state would violate freedom of speech in such a blatant manner. Born Claire Boucher, this is one artist that is not afraid to express her opinions regardless of the political dangers. She says that the situation in Russia as well as the verdict in the court case made her feel depressed.
She studied in the country and said that she was fully familiar with their appalling record on human rights. To her Russia is a ‘fucked up’ state but artists need to continue performing there in order to educate the local population. However she was broadly supportive of the younger generation which she considers to be a lot more progressive than their elders. Here is a link to a clip of Grimes performing (thankfully she is not about to be arrested by a nasty regime):
