The Russian Prime Minister has Called for the Release of Pussy Riot
Has there been a change of heart in the Kremlin? The jailed Russian Punk Collective await their fate.
The case has attracted international criticism, particularly from the music circles where artists feel that the Russian Punk Collective Pussy Riot has been treated abominably by the Russian authorities. Now the Prime Minister has called for the release of the group. You will remember that Dmitry Medvedev was once the bed-warmer President of Russia during which time he held the seat in anticipation of the return of Vladimir Putin the current president. Medvedev argues that they had already served enough time in prison. Nevertheless he says that he was sickened by their punk prayer protest. The Wall Street Journal has been reporting a meeting between various members of the United Russia Party at which the premier argued that prolonging the trio’s time in prison is not really a productive move.
Jailing artists that disagree with the Orthodox Church
Medvedev says that the term is very strong and a terrible burden. Nevertheless he is anxious not to step on the toes of the judges in the case. He is of the view that the punishment has already allowed them to think about what they had done through stupidity or other reasons. Pussy Riot indicated that they might be persuaded to apologize to the Russian Orthodox Church but would not admit guilt to the trumped up charges which only served the purpose of illustrating the repressive nature of the Russian regime at the moment.
On the 1st of October this year, a higher court will hear an appeal from the trio. They were given a two year prison sentence on the 17th of August, having been found guilty of hooligans. Apparently the court believes that they were motivated by religious hatred. Meanwhile Pussy Riot delivered a message to their supporters via video. It shows the band abseiling down a wall. They then set fire to an image of President Vladimir Putin. This is not likely to placate the regime.
Nevertheless the Punk Collective says that they have been fighting for the right to sing and criticize. They want to be musicians and artists who can do anything to change their country. Pussy Riot says that the risks are not going to stop them from practicing their ‘musical fight in Russia’. According to them the freedom fighter is bigger than life itself.
