The Mercaleros’ Last Two Albums Set for Re-Issue in time for Joe Strummer’s 60th Birthday

Hellcat Records re-releases
the last two albums with several
rare tracks recorded and performed
before Strummer died.

British rocker Joe Strummer would have turned 60 years old this year. But it is a common knowledge that he already passed away 10 years ago. Logically, the musician’s legacy lives on. To celebrate what could have been his sixth decade, Hellcat Records has decided to release a rare selection of Strummer and his latest band The Mescaleros’ songs.

Strummer was the lyricist, co-founder, and lead vocalist of British punk rock group The Clash. When that band disbanded in 1985, Strummer worked with a backing band, The Mescaleros, which existed from the middle to late 1990s. Its first album called ‘Rock Art and the X-Ray Style’ had a 1999 release. The album was released though Mercury Records.

The sophomore album of The Mescaleros, ‘Global a Go-Go’ was out in 2001. In December 2002, Strummer died due to an undiagnosed congenital heart problem. His demise was never a detriment to the release of the band’s third album in 2003, ‘Streetcore.’ Both records were produced and released by Hellcat Records, a Californian punk label.

The last two albums of The Mercaleros have been re-released. The two were compiled in a package, which also includes several new and never-been-heard-of tracks. Also included in the compilation and re-release are live versions of B-sides ‘The Harder They Come’ and ‘Rudi, a Message to You.’ The live version of ‘Blitzkreig Bop,’ covered by Ramones, is also featured.

Fans will get to hear the live version of ‘Bindee Bhagee’ that was performed during Strummer’s last show at Acton Town Hall held on November 2002. In the same show, The Mescaleros staged a benefit concert for London firefighters. During the night, Mick Jones, who was among the audience, eventually joined the band on stage and gave an impromptu and unplanned performance.
